Does consuming plant-based protein powder inhibit the absorption of iron?

According to Dr Lynch, nutrient absorption limitations through one compound inhibiting the other will happen often, and individuals have to educate themselves on when to take nutrients to take apart from each other to avoid counteracting absorption. All meals consumed will in some way limit the absorption of some nutrient, whether its iron or some other nutrient. For example, higher tyrosine-containing meals will limit the absorption of tryptophan, higher calcium will reduce magnesium, and higher iron will limit calcium. Oxalates can bind minerals, and so on.

If you are low in iron, work with your health professional to evaluate why you have low iron levels. Some factors that limit the absorption of iron include:
- low stomach acid
- low red meat intake
- heavy menstruation
- recent bodily injury
- gut infection
- internal bleeding

If you need additional iron supplementation, ask your health professional about including Optimal Iron Chewable or Optimal Iron Plus Cofactors in your protocol, and be sure to take these away from the plant-based protein powders (and calcium!) if necessary.
